Maine’s Special Marijuana Committee Begins Creating Marijuana Laws

Even with dispensary moratoriums popping up like weeds around the state, Maine’s special marijuana committee has started the task of implementing the rules and regulations of Question 1. The committee already has dozens of bills to sort through on top of determining final regulations. The process is expected to last for much of 2017.

Some Senators still have a lot of questions, including Republican Senator Roger Katz, according to Maine Public. He’s concerned about taxation, licensing and public safety. A prioritized list of tasks will be compiled for the committee.

Katz said, “Public safety is an issue. Taxation. How are we going to license the oversight of growing, the licensing and oversight of retail?”

Katz has diminished optimism that the committee will finish their work on implementing Question 1 in the available legislative session. He believes it will spill over to next fall. The committee is confident that it will complete its assigned task in a reasonable amount of time.
