Maine Communities Continue to Ban Marijuana Dispensaries

Marijuana

Not all towns and cities in Maine are as marijuana-friendly as the majority of the state’s voters. Yes, recreational marijuana is legal in Maine, but some local areas are imposing moratoriums on dispensaries.

Some cities want to make their towns “dry towns,” according to NECN News. Oakland and Skowhegan are both considering banning recreational marijuana sales entirely and making their towns dry. South Portland is imposing a six-month moratorium.

Portland Mayor Patti Smith said, “We need to make sure we get it as right as we can for our community.”

Yes on 1 campaign manager David Boyer said, “Marijuana is still going to be sold in Maine – it’s still going to be sold in Skowhegan. We have a choice…do we want marijuana sold by licensed businesses, or by drug dealers that don’t check IDs?”

One point Boyer made is that cities banning retail marijuana shops will still reap the benefits of the tax dollars collected from retail sales.

Currently there are 18 moratoriums in place now with potentially 28 more coming.
