As of Today, Recreational Marijuana Possession and Use Is Legal in Maine

While there are no retail shops open yet to sell recreational marijuana in Maine, Mainers are now allowed to possess and use it legally. Some are coining the day “Marijuana Monday.”

Adults ages 21 and older can legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, but they cannot use it in public, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Adults are permitted to giveaway up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana to a friend. Sales are prohibited until retail shops open.

State-licensed marijuana social clubs will be allowed in 2018. Adults over the age of 21 will be permitted to use marijuana in these clubs. Using marijuana in public results in a $100 fine.

Medical marijuana dispensaries within the state are not permitted to sell to recreational users.

Adults can grow up to six mature plants at home and have as many as 12 immature plants. All plants must be tagged and licensed by state standards.

Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
