Maine Lawmakers Just Started Working on State’s Recreational Marijuana Law

Maine Weed

Maine approved recreational marijuana in November, but lawmakers are just getting started on determining laws for the new industry. They have dozens of topics to touch on and determine regulations for. From packaging to assessing the continued need for a medical marijuana program are just a couple important topics.

One question on the minds of lawmakers and medical marijuana patients is if they will still have access to the strains and tinctures they need, according to Central Maine. Maine may be increasing the age at which residents can legally use, possess, buy and grow marijuana. They are also considering regulations for drugged driving.

Topics of high interest include:

  • Proper licensing procedures and fee schedules
  • Approved facility types
  • Should a limit on recreational marijuana business licenses be in place
  • Labeling requirements
  • Employer/employee relationships
  • Tax rates
  • Tackling federal issues such as encouraging banks to work with marijuana businesses

Maine will be taking a few lessons from the states that already have thriving recreational marijuana industries like Colorado, Oregon and Washington State. The Joint Selection Committee on Marijuana Implementation will draft rules recommended for the program. The state Legislature will consider, debate and adopt proper regulations.

On Tuesday, February 28, a public comment session will be held at 1 p.m. at the Cross Office Building in room 216. Those interested in voicing their opinions regarding regulation are encouraged to attend.
