Houlton City Council: Marijuana Shops and Cultivation Are Welcome

Maine Marihuana

While towns across Maine discuss ordinances to ban marijuana businesses, Houlton has rolled out its welcome mat. A recent city council vote unanimously approved permitting cultivation centers and retail marijuana shops. Entrepreneurs are welcomed to come into the town, bring jobs and much needed tax revenue.

Houlton has struggled financially for quite some time, according to Bangor Daily News.  When February 2018 comes around, Houlton will be ready for these marijuana businesses to open and welcome patrons. Investors can take a look around the town to determine where an ideal location for their business might be.

Councilor Sue Waite-York said, “This town has been struggling for years. We’re not in a position to let this opportunity slip by.”

As it stands now, recreational marijuana businesses would be permitted in the industrial areas of the town near the airport. Actual zoning regulations and the number of business licenses to be awarded have not been decided yet.

Waite-York said, “It’s not a common business. But it’s a good opportunity. I’m a fan.”

Resident of neighboring Ludlow, Steven Porter, said, “The gist of it is: big business is coming to town. It’s not a bad, ugly thing. It’s a greenhouse indoors.”

Porter added that, “This is millions of dollars we’re talking about.”

Advocate Hillary Lister said, “Investors are making their decisions right now about where they want their businesses located.”

There is more support than opposition in Houlton to let recreational marijuana shops open up in the town. The economic boost is attractive to many residents and the city council.
