The Town of York to Vote on Banning Recreational Marijuana Sales

Maine MJ

Residents in the town of York will decide whether to maintain or lift the ban on recreational marijuana, as the issue will be on the May ballot. It is the only town in the southern portion of Maine to oppose recreational marijuana.

Several residents spoke in favor of the ban at a recent meeting, according to Seacoast Online. The only person speaking against the ban was caregiver Ron Fousek, who is a medical marijuana caregiver. No board members spoke at all during the meeting.

Residents opposing retail marijuana shops in York say that their opposition is due to the potential for increased exposure to teens and increased teen use. Another concern was marijuana edibles as many are appealing to children and teens.

Arthur Kyricos said, “You have an opportunity to prevent this being retailed in our town and I hope you will let that happen.”

Sally Manninen said, “I worry that is what’s happening now is that this industry wants to come to our beautiful town of York. That isn’t about the right to smoke pot on the back stoop. It’s about an industry that will market to young people. That’s who it’s going to be targeted toward, and a lot won’t be legal users.”

Fousek urges voters to reject the ban. He said that his caregiver grow will have “to keep its options open and to work together on a plan that creates jobs and much needed revenue for York, while mitigating any impacts on the neighborhood and the community.”

Fousek argues that a moratorium is a better idea.
