‘Gifting’ Marijuana in Maine Is Legal as State Works out Licensing Rules

Selling marijuana is still illegal in Maine, but gifting it is legal. Until the state can determine its final licensing procedures, the “gifts” can be attached to other purchases. One business, Cannabis Shack, is accepting donations for “shipping and handling” and gives marijuana to customers for free.

While Maine’s marijuana laws are in limbo, the gifting loophole is a popular options for Mainers, according to U.S. News & World Report.  Businesses are doing all that they can to ensure that their crops are not going to waste and to keep recreational marijuana out of the black market.

Legal sales will not begin until the state is done with its process of developing a regulatory system.
