Houlton Approves Medical Marijuana Moratorium

Cannabis

The Houlton Planning Board has approved a 180-day medical marijuana moratorium. Maine law allows individual jurisdictions to determine specific regulations regarding marijuana businesses. Houlton voters have already banned recreational marijuana – but medical marijuana was not included.

The moratorium is to give the town time to study how medical marijuana would impact the community, Bangor Daily News says. The location and operation of medical marijuana dispensaries would be decided. The moratorium includes information regarding caregivers having retail storefronts.

The planning board is expected to determine proper land-use regulations for marijuana businesses. Public safety and the concern of Houlton residents are also being taken into consideration.

The discussion regarding medical marijuana businesses in Houlton is expected to be ongoing until resolutions are established.
