Governor LePage is more than unsatisfied with lawmakers’ inability to decide on regulations for the state’s recreational marijuana industry. He’s threatened to not implement recreational marijuana because of it. LePage has a “my way or the highway” attitude as his conditions have not been fulfilled to his satisfaction.
Sales are set to begin on February 1, but no one has a license yet – and they can’t even apply for one yet, Boston.com reports. Since regulations are not in place, applications for operations licenses cannot be made available. Lawmakers have to overhaul the voter-approved initiative yet again – in hopes that the governor will approve.
Representative Drew Gattine said, “We’re sort of in this world where we’re operating where marijuana is legal to have but it’s not legal to sell, so therefore there is only a black market.”
The committee will convene again to work on a compromise bill that they hope will pass quickly. House Republican Leader Kenneth Fredette says that the current recreational marijuana sales moratorium needs to be extended until proper regulations are adopted.
LePage expects much of the recreational market to shift to the medical marijuana market.
He said, “If you don’t fix the loopholes, there’s going to be no such thing as recreational marijuana – it’s going to be all medical marijuana.”
